Madikwe Game Reserve | Luxury Lodges

Madikwe Game Reserve is a prime safari destination with an excellent choice of accommodation venues and fun outdoor activities for travellers of all ages and tastes.

As one of the largest game reserves in South Africa, Madikwe is home to a spectacular diversity of fauna and flora, including the sought-after Big Five. This rich biodiversity is in part thanks to Madikwe’s unique location.

Madikwe Game Reserve lies in the North West Province and borders Botswana in the north – it is approximately 40km from Gaborone, 90km north of Zeerust, and 3.5 hours' drive from Johannesburg and Pretoria.

This puts the 75,000-hectare reserve in a transition zone between the Lowveld bushveld and the Kalahari thornveld, where several rare species from both ecosystems naturally occur. In fact, Madikwe is one of the few reserves in southern Africa where the Kalahari Gemsbok and Springbok share territory – also the Brown Hyena and the Aardwolf – making for exceptional wildlife encounters.

Geographically the region also has much to offer visitors. There are the towering volcanic intrusions or Inselbergs, vast open woodland, and grasslands – dissected by the “Rant van Tweedepoort” – as well as the riverine environment along the Marico River in the east and the Dwarsberg Mountains in the south. The resulting contrast in topography and vegetation types ensures ample game viewing opportunities.

The climate is typically mild to hot, but winter nights can be cold. A major bonus for travellers young and old is that the reserve falls within a malaria-free game area.

Madikwe offers a range of superb accommodation options from five-star and exclusive- use luxury lodges to family-friendly lodges and a down-to- earth eco-friendly camp.

Madikwe Game Reserve was officially established in late 1991 and is run as a joint venture between the North West Parks Board, the private sector, and local communities. All three stakeholders work together to maintain this mutually beneficial “partnership in conservation,” so ensuring long-term local economic development.

The success of this approach has made Madikwe Game Reserve a role model for similar wildlife-based tourism ventures elsewhere in South Africa.

Plus, its relative proximity to Pilanesberg National Park has led to the initiation of a plan to develop a protected “Heritage Park” conservation corridor that will unite these two world-renowned game parks.

SWIMMING POOLS
The pools do not all have nets covering them, therefore children are not allowed near the swimming pool areas unless supervised by an adult. There are steps and shallow areas inside of the pool, as a result diving is not permitted

FROM OR TAMBO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT TO JACI’S LODGES VIA MOLATEDI GATE

  • Directly after leaving the airport, look out for the road sign saying R21 PRETORIA / KEMPTON PARK. The sign will be on your left, with the turn-off located very soon after leaving the airport.
  • Follow the road signs to PRETORIA and N1 POLOKWANE.
  • After approximately 36km you will see large signs over the highway, follow the directional signage for PRETORIA and N1 POLOKWANE / NORTH and turn onto this highway.
  • After passing a number of off-ramps, you will see signs for a toll road called BAKWENYA PLATINUM HIGHWAY / N4 / RUSTENBURG. Take the left slip-lane off the N1 Highway to get on to this toll road.
  • You are now on the N4 Highway. Continue on the N4 and PASS THROUGH 3 TOLL GATES and THE TOWN OF RUSTENBURG.
  • Approximately 6km after Rustenburg, take the off-ramp marked SUN CITY / PHOKENG.
  • Continue through the village of BOSHOEK (We advise that you refuel at Boshoek, as there is no fuel available inside the reserve) and proceed until reaching a stop street indicating a right turn to Sun City. DO NOT TURN RIGHT to Sun City, CONTINUE STRAIGHT.
  • Follow the R565 ROAD for approximately 39.4km passing Black Rhino Reserve and the Pilanesberg Platinum Mine turnoff, and turn left at KAYAKULU (Tar road)
  • Continue straight along the D548 ROAD for 24.8km until you reach a T-JUNCTION.
  • Turn right at the T-Junction onto a tar road, sign-posted DERDEPOORT.
  • After about 10km you will pass signs to OBAKENG VILLAGE on your left, continue straight.
  • Continue for another 10km. You will have to turn left - as a road closure is in place - towards MADIKWE / MOLATEDI GATE (Sign-posted)
  • Continue on towards MOLATEDI VILLAGE. DO NOT TAKE THE DERDEPOORT TURNING to the right. Continue straight through the village (where the road changes from tar to gravel) and then over the MARICO RIVER (+/- 14km)
  • Continue straight through the 1st boom gate and then on to the MOLATEDI GATE entrance (+/- 7km) to access MADIKWE GAME RESERVE.
  • From here the gate staff will sign you in and can give you directions to JACI’S LODGES (You will turn immediately right after entering the Molatedi Gate, simply follow the signs to Jaci's Lodges from there)
