Madikwe Safari Lodge | Big 5

5 Star Madikwe Game Reserve image

Madikwe Safari Lodge lies in the north-eastern region of malaria-free Madikwe Game Reserve, a region well known for its exceptional game viewing, including the Big Five.
This superb Lodge comprises three distinct accommodations – Lelapa Lodge, Dithaba Lodge, and Kopano Lodge – offering 20 delightful thatched suites in total.

The spacious suites are tastefully done out in a fresh, contemporary style with an inspired Afro-chic twist and positioned to optimise the sweeping views of the untamed terrain below and across to the picturesque Dwarsberg range in the distance.

Each of the 20 air-conditioned suites features a double bed, wood-burning fireplace plus an electric blanket for the chilly winter months, a cosy sitting area, full bathroom, indoor and outdoor showers, and elevated deck with a private plunge pool. Additional facilities include gym-in- a-basket (dumbbells, exercise mats, core strengthener ring), a hairdryer, insect repellent, international adaptor plugs, a safe, and mini-bar.

  • Family-friendly Lelapa Lodge
    +

Lelapa Lodge takes its name from the Tswana word for “family” and is the heart of the Madikwe Safari Lodge group of accommodations. This family-friendly Lodge can sleep up to 24 guests in twelve charming suites and is open to children of all ages. It is also suitable for disabled travellers who have assistance.

Four of the suites provide a second bedroom with two single beds for children aged 15 years or younger. One of these extended suites is furnished with a sleeper sofa, making it ideal for families with three children.

Lelapa’s open-plan reception area has indoor and outdoor dining rooms and a bar lounge which leads onto a verandah from where you can take in the magnificent vistas or wander down to the communal pool. Extra amenities include complimentary Wi-Fi in the common areas, children’s activities, babysitting services, and menu options for guests with specific dietary preferences.
  • Towering Dithaba Lodge
    +

This towering Lodge takes its name from the term Dithaba which means “mountain” in Tswana and provides a majestic outlook on Madikwe’s expansive plains.

With just four double suites, this intimate Lodge is ideal for small family and group getaways. Guests should be aware, however, that the Lodge is typically only open to young adults aged 16 years and older and is also not equipped for disabled travellers given its lofty position.

Dithaba can also be reserved on an exclusive-use basis for a larger family or group gathering in which case children of all ages are welcome. Sole-use of this fantastic Lodge includes the dedicated services of a lodge manager, a chef who will happily cater to your dietary requirements as well as a qualified field ranger.

The Lodge’s relaxed guest hub has an interior sitting room, complete with a wood-burning fireplace, and dining space as well as an exterior lounge and dining space where evening meals are served under the crisp star-filled night skies.
  • Intimate Kopano Lodge
    +

Intimate Kopano Lodge truly lives up to the spirit of its name which is Tswana for “small gathering” in Tswana. This gem of the Madikwe Safari Lodge collective can accommodate a maximum of eight guests in four elite suites, ensuring the ultimate in unforgettable wilderness breakaways.

Guests should be aware that Kopano is not open to teenagers and children under the age of 15 years. However, it can cater to disabled travellers with assistance. The Lodge also has menu options for guests with specific dietary demands.

Kopano’s impressive open-plan guest hub boasts beautifully-appointed interior and exterior dining rooms as well as an indoor sitting room, complete with a wood-burning fireplace, and outdoor gathering space from where you can appreciate the sheer tranquility and breathtaking scenery of Madikwe Game Reserve at your leisure.

A visit to Madikwe Safari Lodge promises ample opportunities to discover the incredible biodiversity that makes Madikwe a premier Game Reserve. Activities include sunrise and sunset game drives in 4X4 safari vehicles, guided bush walks, bird watching, al fresco breakfasts, lunches, and dinners, stargazing, and cultural village excursions.

Unfortunately, children aged five years and younger are not permitted to join the regular game viewing activities. The good news is that Madikwe Safari Lodge is renowned for the special attention it pays to junior guests. To this end, the Lodge provides a post-
breakfast family drive for children between the ages of two and five.

The highlight for junior guests, however, is bound to be the Lodge’s Eco House. Here youngsters can participate in a range of supervised “Cubz” activities including bush orientation, bug CSI, dung tracking, track pack with plaster of Paris, painting, drawing, arts, crafts, baking, pizza-making, stargazing, games nights, and more.

While the kids have fun learning, why not take the time to pamper yourself with a rejuvenating spa treatment in the privacy of your suite. Or browse the Lodge’s exquisite  gift boutique.

If you dream of having a romantic wedding ceremony with a difference, each of Madikwe Safari Lodge’s individual accommodations can be booked on an exclusive-use basis for small wedding parties. The Lodges are all equipped to ensure your “big day” lives up to your expectations of an unforgettable nuptial ceremony against the background of the pristine African wilderness. And what better setting to spend your honeymoon, celebrate an anniversary or enjoy a romantic couples hideaway.

Famed for its world-class service and warm hospitality, Madikwe Safari Lodge is the perfect destination to salute life and the marvels of Mother Nature without compromising on your creature comforts.

Food

Healthy. Fresh. Delicious. Plentiful. That’s the secret to Madikwe’s culinary success.

[Unforgettable! Tripadvisor] “I would be remiss if I did not mention the extraordinary food served throughout the visit. From the sit down meals to the impromptu snacks while on the drives in the bush. Everything was delicious!

No two mealtimes at Madikwe are the same. Whether in the dining room, on the deck, in the boma or out in the bush – the one thing that remains consistent is the calibre of dishes presented. Simple and unpretentious, yet packed with wholesome flavour.

Younger palates will also find their flavour, with a full kid’s menu specially crafted around our younger guests.

As parents of twins – Mack and Madi – my late wife Britt (matriarch of the MORE family until her passing in 2016) and I learned first-hand what it meant to travel with young children. They don’t fit into prescribed timelines, and have specific needs when it comes to what they eat, where they sleep, and their entertainment. We experienced the joy in their effervescent excitement at discovering a new place, and came to realise that schedules should be left at home, with a little extra freedom for them to just play, explore, and be kids… And so began our journey of crafting the Mack & Madi Family Experience, which we have brought into our lodges and hotels for our family travellers. – Robert More, Owner of MORE

We have carefully created environments that are welcoming to guests of all ages, and encourage your family to feel at home away from home – but with some added luxuries. We provide space and places for loved ones to come together, and with every comfort and convenience afforded, there is time for the rest to take care of itself.

Madikwe offers families (with both older and younger children) a very special place to experience something magic together. At Lelapa Lodge children of all ages are welcome and we offer a host of activities for their enjoyment. Dithaba Lodge: Regret no children except if the Lodge is booked exclusively.

Many of us have kids of our own, so we know and understand what an unforgettable experience it is for children to be in the bush. We have taken a lot of time to design a kids’ menu of activities which will keep juniors entertained, and parents relaxed.

The ECO HOUSE is an educational (and entertainment) centre built specifically for kids – and anyone with a fascination for the wild world and its inhabitants.

The facility is always a hive of activity, where kids can partake in painting, drawing, making location specific models and arts and get to experience some of the live specimens from the reserve.

Parents have the choice of either engaging in the learning with their kids, or stealing a few hours for themselves. This experience is unique to Madikwe Safari Lodge, and has been crafted in consultation with the owner parents, guest parents, managers and North West parks (who have assisted in all the required permits for the live specimens).

In kid language… ECO-HOUSE is just AWESOME!

  • Continue on the same road and after 5 km / 3.1 miles, there is a crossroad where you will still continue straight;

Your private African safari

Head out on safari each morning and afternoon. Start and finish every day out in the wild in search of animals big and small. Whether leopard or chameleon, rhino or dung beetle, no two drives are the same!

Game Drives head out early morning at sunrise, and late afternoon just before sunset in search of the many animal species which call this place home. No more than six people at a time (for Kopano & Dithaba lodges) share in a private and intensely personal safari experience in the company of their Madikwe Guide. At Lelapa Lodge up to 8 guests are accommodated per safari vehicle.

Madikwe, with its rugged terrain, bold colours and habituated wild animal species make for a Photographer’s Dream. Wild Dogs are a signature species of the Madikwe Game Reserve.
